Classic: Real Madrid beat Barcelona 3-1 at the Bernabeu

Federico Valverde has scored three goals in Clasicos: one in Madrid, one in Barca and one in Saudi Arabia.

A clinical Real Madrid beat Barcelona in El Clasico to go top of the league and hand their rivals their first league defeat of the season.

Karim Benzema scored Real’s opening goal after Vinicius Jr’s shot was saved in his path by Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Federico Valverde doubled the champions’ lead before the break with a beautiful 20-yard strike.

Ferran Torres got one off Robert Lewandowski’s shot but Rodrygo settled it with a penalty.

Their rivals started the day with seven wins and a draw from their opening eight games, but Real now sit three points clear as they remain unbeaten.

It was Xavi’s first away defeat in charge of Barcelona in almost a year.
