Erling Haaland’s records, and what Man City can break to face Man Utd

Erling Haaland scored twice in City’s last game against Sevilla in the Champions League

Erling Haaland is preparing for his first derby against Manchester United on Sunday after breaking a record at Manchester City.

Haaland seems to be breaking records every time he steps on the pitch for City, scoring 14 goals in 10 games before the international break.

So what milestones has the 22-year-old Norwegian, who is already at his fifth club, achieved and what else is possible this season? BBC Sport takes a look.

What records has he already broken this season?

Fewest games needed to score 25 Champions League goals

Haaland has scored 11 goals in his first seven Premier League appearances, taking Mick Quinn’s old record from December 1992. He shares the record for most goals in the first 10 Premier League games with Quinn, Papiss Cisse and Diego Costa with three games. to spare

His nine goals in his first five games were also a record, making him the top scorer of any Premier League season in August.

Haaland is the first player to score in four away games in the Premier League.

He also broke some records on his Champions League debut at Sevilla, with a brace in the 4-0 win, plus a late winner against his old club Dortmund.

Haaland became the first player to score multiple goals for three different clubs on his Champions League debut – after Salzburg scored twice against Genk and Dortmund against Paris St-Germain.

That took him to 25 Champions League goals in just 20 games – breaking the old record held by Ruud van Nistelrooy and Roberto Soldado, who scored 16 in their first 20 games.

He is the youngest player to score 25 goals in the competition, surpassing Kylian Mbappe’s record, who took Lionel Messi’s mark.

His goal against Dortmund took his tally to 26 goals in 21 games.

He has already equaled the record for most goals in his first 30 Champions League games, scoring once with nine games to go and breaking Van Nistelrooy’s record.

Haaland also holds the record for the fewest Champions League games needed to score 10, 15 and 20 goals. No one else has scored multiple goals in four consecutive appearances in the competition.

He is also the first City player to score on his Premier League debut and the club’s Champions League debut.

Haaland’s previous goal records

He started his time in Germany even better. Haaland is the only player to have scored on his debut for Dortmund in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League (as well as a brace in the German Super Cup).

He was the first player to score a hat-trick on his Bundesliga debut as a substitute (came on after 56 minutes at Augsburg).

He holds the record for most goals in the first two, three, five and six Bundesliga games (five, seven, eight and nine goals, respectively).

It took him 50 games to score his first 50 goals in the Bundesliga, a record, and at the age of 21 he became the youngest player to do so.

Haaland is the youngest player to score four goals in a Bundesliga game (20 years and 123 days, against Hertha Berlin).

He barely stayed to set many records at his first three clubs, with the exception of several Champions League milestones with Salzburg.

He left Bryne at 16 without scoring in 16 games. At Molde he scored 20 goals in 50 games and at Salzburg he scored 29 goals – including five hat-tricks – in just 27 games.

International record? Yes, he has one of those too. His nine goals in a match against Honduras in 2019 remains the record for a FIFA Under-20 World Cup match.

He has scored 21 goals in 23 games with the Norwegian senior team.

The most goals were scored in the first 10 Premier League games

What records can he break?

Haaland could break the Premier League goals record in a season if he keeps it up.

The record is 34: Andy Cole in 1993-94 and Alan Shearer the following season. But then there were 42 league games.

Haaland “only” needs 24 goals in the next 31 games to win that.

The Premier League record of 38 matches is 32 by Mohamed Salah in 2017-18.

He may struggle to match the record for Europe’s top five leagues: Lionel Messi’s sensational 50 goals in 2011-12 La Liga.

No one has won the Premier League Golden Boot with a record of one goal or better. Harry Kane was the closest with 29 goals in 30 games in 2016-17.

Haaland’s scoring rate in England’s top flight would end at 60 goals.

Tommy Johnson’s 38 goals in 1928-29 remains the record for a player in a single season in all competitions.

The record for Champions League goals in a season could be more difficult: Cristiano Ronaldo scored a remarkable 17 goals in 11 games in 2013-14.

So what other records can he break this season?

The most goals scored by a player in a calendar month was Luis Suarez in December 2013. Haaland scored just one goal in August, but he has a good few months to try to overcome that.

The most goals by a player in their first 20 Premier League games is Kevin Phillips’ 19 and Cole’s 28 in 30 games.

Cole holds the record for the fewest games needed to score 30 Premier League goals (32) and it might be a bit ambitious to think this season, but it took Shearer and Cole 45 games to score 40 goals.

Jamie Vardy holds the record for most consecutive games in the Premier League with 11. Haaland is at five.

Shearer hit a record five three-pointers in 1995-96. Haaland already has two.

The most goals in a Premier League game is five, shared by several players, including Aguero against Newcastle in 2015-16.

In the Champions League, Van Nistelrooy has the record for the fewest goals conceded in 30 (34) and 35 (42) games. If Haaland scores another nine goals, he would also break or equal those records.

Haaland can also close Norway’s goalscoring record this season. Jorgen Juve is only 12 goals short of his national record of 33 goals in the 1920s and 30s.
