Fulham 2-2 Bournemouth: The Cherries remain unbeaten under Gary O’Neil

Aleksandar Mitrovic’s penalty goal was his fifth this season at Craven Cottage.

Bournemouth remain unbeaten under interim manager Gary O’Neil after drawing 2-2 with Fulham.

The Cherries took the lead through Dominic Solanke after just over a minute, but Issa Diop equalized for the hosts.

Jefferson Lerma restored the lead before the break, but an Aleksandar Mitrovic penalty early in the second half brought Fulham level again.

O’Neil has now overseen four draws and two wins since Scott Parker was sacked in August.

Fulham fought back well to twice come from behind to earn a point after back-to-back defeats at Newcastle and West Ham.

The result leaves Bournemouth in ninth place in the Premier League, with Fulham one place and one point below.

The O’Neil job application is going strong

O’Neil remains a good chance to be Parker’s permanent successor after another impressive display for the Cherries.

Parker’s sacking, following the 9-0 humiliation by Liverpool at Anfield, led to the 39-year-old stepping down, but Bill Foley’s handover looks set to be completed with O’Neil continuing for now.

It took just 64 seconds for his confident side to get off to a flying start when a brilliant pass from Marcus Tavernier saw Philip Billing and Solanke trade passes before the former Liverpool striker slotted his shot past Bernd Leno.

And they were quickly shaken by Fulham leveling when Solanke set up Lerma, who gave Leno no chance from the edge of the box.

But following Mitrovic’s equaliser, Bournemouth spent much of the second half on the back foot and rarely threatened to regain the lead for a third time.

They face Southampton at home on Wednesday and should relish the chance to fight alongside their neighbors on a six-match unbeaten run.
