The death of the PnB Rock rapper in Los Angeles this week stunned the hip-hop community, but it also led to familiar conversations that have been going on for years.
The rapper was shot while eating with his girlfriend at Roscoe’s House of Chicken ‘N Waffles in what appears to be a robbery, according to Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore. Notably, Moore said a photo of the couple’s meal was posted on Instagram with the location tagged.
PnB Rock is not the first rapper to die of gun violence, but his death is another addition to a trend that has been going on since at least 2018. Every year since then, gun violence – through robbery or dissent – has killed at least one person. A rapper who was already famous or on the cusp of crossover fame.
“The people around these rappers earn a lot. It’s time to really start reminding!!! At least TRY to put your foot down if you CARE! Tell them!!! You are not as loved as you think you are!!! you are a booty!!!! In a world full of predators!!!! What’s not clicking???!!!” Rapper Nicki Minaj he tweeted After the death of PnB Rock.
His tweets and organic conversations between other artists and fans on social media address hip-hop’s usual themes: masculinity, safety, and handling rising fame.
“The unreported robbery attempts involving rappers is ridiculous…hey rappers don’t talk about it because some people feel it’s embarrassing to admit it or talk about it. Rappers are literally being targeted and tested in broad daylight,” podcast host and entertainer . DJ Akademiks tweeted on Monday.
He previously spoke with PnB Rock DJ Akademiks about an attempted robbery when he was out with his girlfriend and daughter. Looks like the rapper from Philadelphia didn’t have any security when he was at Roscoe’s on Monday.
