Hungary 0-2 Italy: The European champions reach the Nations League final at the expense of the hosts

Italy is the third nation to qualify for the Nations League finals

Italy beat Hungary in the Nations League semi-finals, beating hosts Budapest.

Marco Rossi’s Hungarian side went into the match at the Puskas Arena needing just a draw to reach the last four of the competition.

However, thanks to a defensive lapse, Giacomo Raspadori fired the ball into an empty net to put Italy ahead.

Federico Dimarco sealed victory for the European champions when he tapped in Bryan Cristante’s cross after the break.

The result means Italy finish top of Group A3 with 11 points from six games, one point above Hungary, third-placed Germany and fourth-placed England.

It was also Italy’s first win in Budapest since 1996 and despite goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma being called upon to make several brilliant late saves, Roberto Mancini’s side were deserved winners.

Italy, who failed to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar, will meet Croatia and the Netherlands in next June’s semi-final tournament, while Spain and Portugal meet in Braga on Tuesday for the last available place.
