Kalani David, a professional surfer and skateboarder, has died after being caught surfing

He was 24 years old.

Kalani David excelled in both sports, competing all over the world in both disciplines. His X Games profile highlights his multi-sport talents from a young age: “(David) grew up surfing and skating, so he could be considered a seasoned veteran at the age of 14,” he says.

At the age of 14, David won team gold and individual gold at the 2012 ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Panama.

His Instagram page is filled with videos and photos of him surfing, skating and fishing.
Famed surfer Kelly Slater posted photos of a young Kalani on Instagram with the 11-time world champion and said: “Kalani was one of the most talented surfers/skaters to ever grace the Earth, constantly pushing the limits every time he was on his feet. ..Condolences to Kalani from the coast and friends around the world. to the great community.”

According to a 2019 Men’s Journal article, David underwent surgery to help correct a rare heart condition called Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. The open-heart procedure was done to help reduce the seizures he underwent, the article says.

In June, David posted a picture of himself riding the tube and wrote: “With these seizures my neurologist keeps telling me to drive and not surf. I mean I could surf but if I had one and didn’t have one. Don’t save yourself in time or die or I’m going to turn into a vegetable because I don’t have enough air in my brain.

“I’m still lucky, I had one seizure while driving and another after a couple of months on the water. The last two years I’ve had terrible seizures in my sleep and only angels are watching over me. It’s time to sort these things out so I can get on with life, at least be able to skate and fish. I am!”

In his latest Instagram post, three weeks ago, David shared a video of himself skateboarding, pulling off various tricks while in and out of a bucket.

CNN has reached out to Costa Rican authorities, but has not heard back.
