Real Madrid missed out on a chance to return to the top of the league as a converted penalty gave Rayo Vallecano a surprise 3-2 victory. the white ones
It was Real’s first defeat in the league this season and leaves Barcelona two points clear at the top of the league after 13 games.
The home side took the lead in Tuesday’s match with Santi Comesaña scoring in the opening five minutes, but Real hit back late in the first half with a Luka Modric penalty and Éder Militão’s acrobatic header.
The score lasted just three minutes as Rayo equalized before the break when Thibaut Courtois was unable to clear Álvaro García’s shot.
Dani Carvajal’s handball midway through the second half gave Rayo a penalty to take the lead. Courtois saved Óscar Trejo’s attempt, but the goalkeeper was too early off his line and the shot was retaken.
The striker made no mistake for the second time as he put his penalty out of Courtois’ reach.
The result means that Rayo have won one and drawn two against the three best teams in La Liga this season: Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
“I wasn’t surprised because we all know how they play, they were better and more precise than us today and it’s a deserved win for them,” Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti told Movistar Plus, according to Reuters.
“We have lost too many challenges. They were awesome. It doesn’t matter if you have more quality if your rivals have more intensity than you.
“I think we have started the season well, but the team has felt a tiring schedule before the World Cup.”
Real, now without a league win for more than two weeks, face Cadiz next Thursday, after which they have a seven-week break while the World Cup is played in Qatar.
Barcelona, on the other hand, have the chance to extend their lead in the league when they play against Osasuna on Tuesday.
