Liverpool 1-0 Manchester City: Mohamed Salah wins

Mohamed Salah has now scored six goals in 11 Premier League games against Manchester City

Liverpool put their recent Premier League struggles behind them to end Manchester City’s winless run in an enthralling and heated encounter at Anfield that saw Jurgen Klopp sent off.

City, boosted by goals from Erling Haaland, were in good form but Liverpool finally found the form that has left them for much of the season to overcome the reigning champions.

Haaland was, for once, not on the scoresheet and it was Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah who made the vital contribution, latching on to goalkeeper Alisson’s clearance after Joao Cancelo’s slip to beat Ederson with 14 minutes remaining.

Ederson produced a superb save to deny Salah in a similar one-on-one situation, while City manager Pep Guardiola was furious that a Phil Foden goal that would have put his side ahead was ruled out by the video assistant referee for Haaland’s foul on Fabinho. .

It wasn’t going to be Haaland’s day, though he did bring two saves from Alisson, but Anfield was left in raptures as Liverpool finally showed why they have consistently been City’s biggest threat.

Tempers ran high in the frenetic final and Klopp was dismissed by referee Anthony Taylor for his protests after Salah felt he had failed, but when the temperatures cool he will be delighted to win.
