PSV Eindhoven 2-0 Arsenal: The Gunners miss out on a chance to seal a place in the last 16

Arsenal have failed to win their last two games after winning eight in a row in all competitions.

Premier League leaders Arsenal missed out on sealing top spot in Europa League Group A as they lost to PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

The Gunners needed just one point to progress directly to the last 16 next March.

But Joey Veerman’s first-time finish from 16 yards and substitute Luuk de Jong’s header – after a mistake by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on his European debut – saw Mikel Arteta’s side lose in Europe for the first time this season.

PSV, led by ex-Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, also had three offside goals disallowed as they comfortably beat Arsenal.

The Gunners must beat Zurich in their final group game at the Emirates Stadium next Thursday (20:00 GMT) to secure a place in the last 16.

If they fail to win and PSV beat Bodo/Glimt in Norway, Arsenal will have two more games in the knockout stages, where the teams that finish third in the Champions League group stage, including Barcelona, enter.

The Gunners have failed in their biggest Euro test to date

Arsenal have been relatively flawless in Europe this season after winning four out of four, including a narrow one 1-0 win over PSV at the Emirates Stadium last week

This was the biggest test yet, but it was second-best PSV – including Everton loanee Jarrad Branthwaite in the center of defense – who dominated in front of their fans.

Cody Gakpo and former Paris St-Germain midfielder Xavi Simons, the 19-year-old caused all sorts of problems for the Gunners defence. Gakpo had two goals ruled out for offside and Simons one.

Arsenal were living dangerously and it was no surprise when Veerman put the hosts ahead before De Jong struck when Ramsdale failed to connect as he tried to clear a corner.

In the end, Arsenal ended up with substitutes Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka and Thomas Partey on the field but they could not salvage a point.

Having won eight games in a row in all competitions, Arteta’s side have now failed to win their last two.

They remain favorites to finish top of the group but Arteta now looks unlikely to rest key players ahead of the heavyweight London derby at Chelsea on November 6 following their second defeat in 16 games this season.
