Real Madrid 2-1 Shakhtar Donetsk: The hosts have won three times

It is the first time since the 2014-15 campaign that Real Madrid have won their first three group games

Real Madrid made it three wins in this season’s Champions League, beating Shakhtar Donetsk at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The hosts’ early dominance spoke volumes as Rodrygo opened the scoring before Vinicius Jr extended the lead.

Oleksandr Zubkov gave the visitors hope with a well-taken header over the Ukrainians.

However, Shakhtar could not find an equaliser, as the Spanish giants edged ever closer to securing a place in the play-offs.

Real Madrid got off to the perfect start when Rodrygo struck from the edge of the box after finding the impressive Aurelien Tchouameni.

Karim Benzema, Federico Valverde and Rodrygo connected well, the latter of which Vinicius Jr. to enter the second home team.

Despite dominating the first half, Carlo Ancelotti’s side went in at half-time alone after Zubkov headed Bogdan Mykhaylychenko’s cross past Madrid’s Ukrainian Andriy Lunin, but the visitors were unable to find a point.

Shakhtar remain second in Group F, one point above RB Leipzig, and face Madrid in the second leg in Warsaw on Tuesday.
