After firing Real Madrid to the La Liga and Champions League titles last season, Karim Benzema is in contention for another prestigious award.
The 34-year-old French international has been named in the Men’s Player of the Year category at the Dubai Globe Soccer Awards. Benzema’s Real Madrid team-mate Thibaut Courtois, Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and Bayern Munich winger Sadio Mané are also in the running as the GSA unveiled its thirteenth edition of the nominees at a gala event on 17 November.
On the women’s side, England’s Euro 2022 winners Lucy Bronze and Beth Mead are up against Spanish midfielder Alexia Putellas and France’s Wendie Renard.
FC Barcelona star Putellas was one of the winners of the 2021 Globe Soccer Awards, along with Paris Saint-Germain and France forward Kylian Mbappé, FC Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski and Italian coach Roberto Mancini.
CNN has partnered with the GSA Awards to launch the CNN Off the Pitch category at this year’s event next month.
The award will recognize the achievements of an individual, club or other football organization for their impact on society and culture as well as for their charitable work.
Some of the prizes up for grabs at the event organized by the Dubai Sports Council include best agent, transfer deal and sports director.
2022 will also see the launch of the Globe Soccer Digital Awards, which will recognize creative creators and eSports players. Categories include best esports player, journalist, TikTok creator, social media influencer and YouTube creator.
A full list of nominees and awards can be found here. Public voting is now open and will close on November 1 before a second ballot.
A jury of coaches, managers and presidents will choose the final winners, taking into account the choices of fans around the world.
