Sheriff Tiraspol 0-2 Man Utd: Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho score

Against Sheriff, Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 799th career club goal

Cristiano Ronaldo ended his barren spell with the first Europa League goal of his career as Manchester United secured victory at Sheriff Tiraspol.

Erik ten Hag’s men suffered defeat at Old Trafford in their Group E clash against Real Sociedad, but responded by taking all three points in Moldova.

The Red Devils opened the scoring in the first half, a beautiful team play as Jadon Sancho calmly finished off Christian Eriksen’s reverse pass.

Sancho, who was left out of the England squad earlier in the day, went close to a second but his low shot was brilliantly cleared in between by Sheriff captain Stjepan Radeljic.

But United doubled their lead before half-time through Ronaldo’s penalty, which Patrick Kpozo awarded after tripping Diogo Dalot in the box.

Ronaldo could have taken him to 800 goals for the club, but he side-footed from the edge of the box, and at the other end, Sheriff couldn’t force David de Gea into any meaningful saves.

In the other group game, Real made it two wins with a 2-1 win over Neil Lennon’s Omonia Nicosia.

Santxo has sent a warning to Southgate

United’s recovery after a poor start to the season was halted at home to Real Sociedade last week, but the team returned to winning ways with a professional performance against Sheriff.

Portuguese star Ronaldo played a key role in the victory as he asked to leave Old Trafford in the transfer window for Champions League football, but ultimately stayed as no club swooped in for his services.

The 37-year-old had not scored in his previous eight games for United until the end of last season, but showed signs of ending that goal drought when he struck from an angle.

He took his mark for the campaign by scoring a brace – his 699th career club goal – but will not get a chance to add to that tally until October 2 against rivals Manchester City in a Premier League clash scheduled for Sunday. Leeds has been delayed.

The Ten Hag’s side will then test their limits after the international break with a grueling 13-match stint in 43 days before Qatar’s World Cup season comes to a halt in November.

The visitors started slowly in the Moldovan capital of Chisinau, with the match being played there for security reasons, but they netted with their first real attack of the competition.

Winger Sancho has been in fine form of late but failed to make the Three Lions squad for the upcoming Nations League games against Italy and Germany and his World Cup place is now in doubt.

But he sent manager Gareth Southgate a reminder of his abilities by turning a defender and calmly converting his third goal of the season, and should have another for Radeljic’s late tap-in.

United were in control of the contest but were unable to add to their tally in the second half as captain Bruno Fernandes’s first-time effort against goalkeeper Maksym Koval.
