Southampton 1-1 West Ham: Declan Rice’s goal denies Saints a much-needed win

Declan Rice’s equalizer extended Southampton’s winless run to five games

Declan Rice’s first Premier League goal in almost a year denied Southampton a vital win as West Ham fought back to draw at St Mary’s.

Romain Perraud controversially put Saints ahead, with the Hammers claiming referee Jarrod Bowen had interfered before the defender’s effort was deflected into the bottom corner.

West Ham failed to convert several chances before Rice combined with substitute Said Benrahma and right-footed Gavin Bazunu for his first league goal since 31 October 2021.

Despite Southampton’s first point in five games, a draw keeps the pressure on boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, leaving the club in the bottom three.

Saints are not out of the relegation zone

Southampton came into the game on the back of a four-game losing streak, which raised doubts over Hasenhuttle’s immediate future.

But while Saints didn’t lay a glove on Manchester City last week – losing 4-0 to the champions – they looked superb in the first half here as Che Adams was twice denied by Lukasz Fabianski.

However, there was controversy surrounding the opening goal, with West Ham players claiming referee Peter Bankes had interfered with Bowen, stopping the Hammers attacker from getting to the ball ahead of Perraud.

West Ham fans called for a free-kick against Kyle Walker-Peters, but the visitors got no satisfaction from VAR as the French Southampton defender celebrated his first Premier League goal.

But with Saints unable to build on a promising first half and ultimately keep their first clean sheet of the season, a draw will do little to lift the mood around the club ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Bournemouth.

Rice to the rescue

Lucas Paqueta reacts to a missed opportunity
West Ham attempted 25 shots against Southampton, the highest total in a single game in the Premier League this season.

While Southampton have struggled, West Ham, looking to extend their run to five games in all competitions, secured qualification for the Europa League knockout stages with two games to spare on Thursday.

However, they were left frustrated in the first half as they created numerous chances, but failed to work the Bazunu Saints keeper.

Emerson shot wide three minutes before Gianluca Scamacca twice sent the wrong side of the post.

Scamacca, who looked sharp during David Moyes’ side, also set up Lucas Paqueta as the Brazilian’s header clipped the outside of the post as West Ham failed to score in the first half for the eighth time in 10 Premier League games this season. .

But while Scamacca and Paqueta couldn’t find their groove, Rice popped up with a well-taken equalizer to extend West Ham’s winless run and keep Saints in the relegation zone.
