Space Force has released the official track ‘Semper Supra’

The song was debuted by John “Jay” Raymond, Chief of Space Operations, during a speech Tuesday at the Air & Space Forces Association’s 2022 Air, Space and Cyber Conference in Maryland.

The Space Force is the newest military branch, created in 2019. The song was written and composed by two former service members, James Teachenor, a former member of the U.S. Air Force Air Force One, and Sean Nelson, a U.S. Coast Guard. Guard Band trombonist and labor organizer, according to a news release from the Secretary of the Air Force’s Office of Public Affairs.

“The song was a long time in the making because I wanted the Force to encompass all the capabilities and vision of the Space Force,” Teachenor said in the release.

After coming up with the song’s lyrics and melody, Teachenor’s project was sent to “various military groups,” the statement said. Teachenor collaborated with Nelson to compose the song.

“I started out knowing other bands’ songs, but I wanted this one to have its own modern twist to reflect what Space Force is – modern, new and very forward,” Nelson said.

The song is named after the US Space Force motto “Semper Supra”, which means “Always Above” in Latin.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to set a Space Force song that will be part of our culture and heritage for years to come,” Raymond said in a statement. “Our traditions are part of the fabric that weaves us together as we carry out our missions side by side.”

Each military branch has its own song. The songs of each military branch “are part of the service base and represent its values, traditions and culture,” the statement said.

The US Army song is “The Army Goes Rolling Along”, adopted in 1952. The US Marines’ Hymn, “The Marines’ Hymn”, was first adopted in 1929 and updated in 1942.

The lyrics to the official US Space Force song are:

We are a strong watchful eye,

Guardians beyond the blue,

invisible first line,

Brave and true warfighters.

Reaching boldly into space,

There is no limit to our heaven.

Being on guard day and night,

We are the Space Force Above.
