Women’s Ballon d’Or: Alexia Putellas wins award for best female footballer in 2022

Alexia Putellas suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the summer ahead of Euro 2022.

Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas has retained the Women’s Ballon d’Or, awarded to the best female footballer in 2022.

Before his injury, Putellas was the top scorer in the Champions League last season for Barca with 11 goals in 10 games.

Arsenal striker Beth Mead was second, while Chelsea striker Sam Kerr was third.

England’s Mead was named the best player at Euro 2022 after winning the Golden Boot, awarded to the tournament’s top goalscorer, as the Lions claimed their first major trophy. 2-1 victory over Germany at Wembley.

Mead’s international teammates Lucy Bronze and Millie Bright were also named, with Barcelona defender Bronze finishing 10th and Chelsea centre-back Bright 15th.

Putellas will have a long layoff of up to a year after being injured in training on the eve of the European Cup, and he said that his recovery is going well, “but it is not yet a won battle”.

He captained Barca in the 2021–22 season, winning the Spanish league title for the third consecutive season. His team won all 30 league games, with Putellas scoring 18 goals and providing 15 assists.

He played and scored twice in front of a record crowd of over 90,000 fans at the Nou Camp in Champions League quarter-final and semi-final wins and despite scoring in the final, the Catalan club were denied a second consecutive title. , lost 3-1 against French side Lyon.

“I’m very happy to be back here,” Putellas said after winning the Ballon d’Or. “I was able to win this award a year ago and it made me want to improve even more.
